Hearth Project. This was a second year Design Studio project. The aim was to create a building in a small space, for a given maker where they could work as well as live in. The image above shows the final idea. (This is an unfinished project)

Initial Sketches

The image on the right shows the initial sketches that i came up with. I chose these ideas as my maker/client is a glassblower who made vases and other products, so I was inspired by the curves as well as abstract shapes of my makers products.

Sketch Models & Ideas

I decided to step away from the curved forms and ideas as I wanted to portray a different message with this project. I wanted the message to relate how my maker/ client uses a traditional material to create untraditional shapes and colours in his work. I wanted to do the same thing within my work for the client/maker, but at this point I hadn’t figured out how I wanted to do that.

I found creating sketch models out of folded and scrunched up paper, helped me explore abstract shapes and gave me ideas. i could instantly envision how arrange them into buildings and drew responses to them

Developed Idea

The image on the right displays a concept design which came directly from the paper sketch models I created above. This drawing also ties in with the message I wanted portray with project as I’d figured out how I was going to show that. I felt by using brick on an abstract shape that would now demonstrate that message.

Development Process Into Final Design

The image on the left shows how a sketch from an earlier stage developed into a concept for a 2 floor design. After seeing how that sketch could work I decided to merge it with the developed above to create the final idea.

Floor Plans & Section

The image on the right shows the ground floor plan on the bottom left and the top floor plan on the top left. On the right of those is a initial draft section drawing and all drawings are to the scale of 1:100
